About the Tradition

What Is Ifa?

One of the world's oldest and most complete divination systems. Not superstition. A science of destiny.

01

What Is Ifa

Ifa is a system of divination and philosophy from the Yoruba people of West Africa, built around 256 sacred verses called Odu. Each Odu holds proverbs, stories and prescriptions accumulated over centuries, offered to guide a person through a specific moment in their life.

Unlike a simple fortune-telling exercise, a reading in Ifa is a structured conversation: a question is asked, an Odu is cast using the Opele chain or the sacred Ikin nuts, and that Odu's stories and guidance are interpreted for the situation at hand.

Ifa is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity β€” not folklore, but a living, structured tradition still practiced today.

Who Is Orunmila α»ŒΜ€rΓΊnmΓ¬lΓ

Orunmila is the Orisa of wisdom and destiny β€” said to have witnessed the creation of the world and to hold knowledge of every path a life can take. He is not worshipped as a distant god but approached as a source of guidance, consulted through the Odu he is said to have first revealed.

03

Is It Real

Skepticism is a reasonable starting point for something unfamiliar. What sets Ifa apart is its continuity: it has been practiced without interruption for centuries, carried through a precise oral tradition. In 2005, UNESCO formally recognized Ifa divination as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity β€” placing it alongside the world's other great living traditions.

It also never stopped being practiced. Yoruba communities carried Ifa across the Atlantic during the transatlantic slave trade, and it took root and grew in Cuba, Brazil, Trinidad and beyond β€” practiced today by millions who trace their spiritual lineage back to Ile-Ife.

04

What Ifa Is Not

Ifa is not devil worship. Esu, often mistranslated as a devil figure, is properly understood as a gatekeeper and messenger β€” the force that governs choice and crossroads, not evil. Ifa is not superstition; it is a structured system with its own internal logic, memorized and transmitted with the same rigor as any body of classical knowledge. And Ifa does not require rejecting any other faith β€” many practitioners hold Ifa alongside Christianity, Islam, or no religion at all.

The Role of AI

Ifa Oracle uses AI trained on the Ifa corpus β€” the 256 Odu, their proverbs, stories and prescriptions β€” to make an authentic reading available in minutes rather than requiring in-person access to a Babalawo. The framework never changes; what changes is how quickly and widely it can reach someone who needs it.
